Lori Light (Coach)
CrossFit Level 1
I am originally from the small town of Seminole, FL, growing up just a short bike ride away from the Gulf shore. I love being outside and participated in many athletic activities and competitive sports throughout my youth, such as soccer, softball, swimming, running, and pole vaulting. My passion for swimming led to several years of teaching swim lessons and coaching the youth program with my swim club. When I got to college I joined the rugby club and went on to play at regional and select-side levels for 13 years, coaching throughout the last six. I continued to recreationally and competitively swim and participate in Master’s meets and triathlons as my main fitness focus over the years.
In 2011, a rugby teammate introduced me to CrossFit in Gainesville, FL where I learned the basic movements and also learned, contrary to my own belief, how terribly out of shape I was. Training only swimming got me good at one thing… swimming! When it came to any other type of strength and conditioning activities I couldn’t last long. I was determined to ramp up my fitness and try to be the best athlete I could be.
When I moved to Ocala in 2011, I joined a friend at CrossFit Pinnacle for “Bring A Friend” day. I was sore for two weeks, but was instantly hooked. I loved to swim, but CrossFit challenged me in ways swimming never had. There is always a different skill or technique to work on, different metabolic pathways to exercise, and workouts always differing in time and intensity. This variety keeps me interested and prevents my body from adapting to any one modality, yet constantly challenging it to get stronger and faster. Also, I realized that I greatly missed the team sport dynamic of the soccer/softball/rugby culture. The CrossFit community has more than filled that void for me. I’ve never found a more dedicated, inspiring, supportive group of people to keep me accountable and motivated to stay after my fitness goals. Along with an internal drive of my own, I find that the camaraderie and motivation from my teammates is the missing link which pushes me to challenge myself more than I would as an individual.
I got CrossFit Level 1 Trainer certified in July 2013 and began interning with CrossFit Pinnacle in January 2014. I have primarily coached the Fundamentals (aka "CrossFit 101", aka “Fundys”) program each month since then and find great satisfaction in helping light that fire inside of people to commit to their fitness goals and lead a more healthy life. I hope to continue to be a part of the Pinnacle family and help others find the same passion I have found for this great sport.
